The introduction of Feed-in-Tariffs has “energised the solar industry in the UK” according to one UK energy company.

FiTs were introduced just over a month ago and offer owners of solar photovoltaic systems payment for every unit of electricity they produce.

Npower, the UK’s leading supplier of solar technology, has seen an 80% rise in enquiries since FiTs began, with a record number of customers having panels installed since the beginning of April.

Npower’s solar expert Louisa Gilchrist said: “It’s fantastic to see Feed-in-Tariffs generating so much interest. The scheme should be applauded for energising the solar industry in the UK.

“The scheme means that the payback period has been reduced to around 15 years for a typical installation costing around £12,000 and this has proved to be a real incentive, especially amongst homeowners who have always had a vested interest in solar energy.”

Solar photovoltaic (PV) uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting, yet requires only daylight, not direct sunlight, to work.
