Scottish and Southern Energy has taken its number of customers past 10 million.

In the last year the company added 335,000 new customers in the UK and Ireland, taking its total gas and electricity total to 9.6m. When it adds on its home services clients, the company crosses the 10m milestone.

SSE’s energy supply director Alistair Phillips-Davies said he was very pleased the company has reached “this significant milestone”.

He added that “while the last decade was about rapid growth, the next decade will be about the transformation in energy supply.”

He predicted patterns of electricity and gas consumption will change as companies offer customers a broader and deeper range of services. “We can expect market conditions to be challenging, as the high wholesale gas prices experienced in recent months demonstrate.”
