Ministers have approved plans made in January to upgrade the Beauly-Denny power line, which goes through the Cairngorms National Park. During the upgrade 100km of power cables and steel pylons will be removed.

A large percentage of the replaced cable will be installed under the ground. The new line, run by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission, will have 25% fewer pylons than exist. The spacing between towers will increase from the current 250 metres to an average of 360 metres.

The changes are aimed to improve the environment of the national park.
