Portland harbour’s plans for a new quay that would help in the development of a wind farm got a boost from Tory MEP Julie Girling.

On a visit to the port Ms Girling said it was a great example of the south west’s potential as a centre for renewable energy. The Port needs the new quay so its equipped for developers building the nearby Eneco wind park off the Isle of Wight.

Ms Girling said: “Here in the South West, we have the potential to attract giants of the renewables energy and boost the economy of the region as a whole. I am committed to making sure that the South West benefits from Europe and perhaps the upshot of this fact-finding mission is that we may be able to unlock some funding sources from the European Union.”

Portland Harbour is the UK’s newest commercial port and is located on the south coast. Construction of the wind farm is due to start in five years and it should be operational by 2018.
