The potential of a European ‘Supergrid’ is to be debated by the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.

In December of last year, the UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding with nine other European states which set out the schedule for the development of an offshore transmission grid.

It has been suggested by the Government that the Supergrid has potential for improving energy security and for saving money for consumers, as well as contributing to climate change mitigation goals.

The Committee will investigate whether the UK’s contribution would be feasible, bearing in mind cost, potential partners, risks and technical challenges.

The deadline for the submission of written evidence is Thursday 31 March 2011.
