Friends of the Earth have today called for an “urgent review” of nuclear policy following David Cameron’s announcement concerning UK nuclear.

The Prime Minister said: “I do think that nuclear power should be part of the mix in the future as it is part of the mix right now.”

Mike Childs, Friends of the Earth’s Head of Energy, said: “The UK can meet its energy needs and tackle climate change by harnessing its vast renewable energy potential and slashing energy waste – new nuclear stations will inevitably starve these programmes of vital funds.

“We must invest in a cleaner, safer future – nuclear power is a gamble we don’t need to take.”
