Essex police investigating allegations made over Chris Huhne covering up a speeding offence back in 2003 have passed their findings to the Crown Prosecution Service. The Energy Secretary fiercely denies the claims and has welcomed the investigation.

Essex police launched the inquiry in May after allegations surfaced following a newspaper interview with Mr Huhne’s then wife Mrs Pryce.

According to reports, David Cameron and Nick Clegg have lined up replacements in case Mr Huhne is forced to quit his post in the Cabinet. Ed Davey, a parliamentary under secretary in the Business Department, and Norman Lamb, Nick Clegg’s Parliamentary Private Secretary have been touted as the frontrunners for the post.

The Energy Secretary could be found guilty of perverting the course of justice by allowing his wife to take speeding penalty points for him.
