EDF Energy’s Hinkley C nuclear plant has been given local planning permission to build in Somerset and will be the first new nuclear plant to be built in the UK for 20 years.

The developments have come just 10 days after the UK Parliament approved the National Policy Statements for Energy Infrastructure. The work is expected to provide jobs for up to 500 people.

Several regulation barriers still exist for EDF, however, the Generic Design Approval must be consented for the Areva reactor as well as further consent from the UK Environment Agency.
