Ukraine’s president made a public appeal for the South Stream gas pipeline to be run through his country. Viktor Yanukovych claimed the cost of building the pipeline through southern Ukraine would slash the project’s cost to €5 billion, according to Worldwide News Ukraine.

At the moment, the transnational pipeline to link Russia and Europe is planned to go through Turkey’s waters of the Black Sea.

President Yanukovych said at a summit in Yalta: “This project will cost much less than the currently discussed €25 billion South Stream. Ours will be five times cheaper.”
