A new £20million facility that makes offshore wind turbine parts has been opened by Energy Secretary Chris Huhne.
TAG Energy Solutions’ new facility on the bank of the River Tees will make large diameter tubulars used to build offshore wind turbine jackets. The factory could produce 100,000 tonnes of these parts a year.
Alex Dawson, Chief Executive of TAG Energy said: “The North East of England has the skills and expertise to not only support this ambition in domestic waters, but also become a hub for the global wind energy sector.”
The Energy Secretary added that innovative and forward-thinking companies were essential to support the offshore wind sector as it begins to help the UK hit its low carbon targets.

Sadly the Tees-side Steelworks at Redcar was already closed down, and steel production ceased, so then the steel for these constructions will need to be transported from elsewhere. Was this factor considered when they make their calculations for the real “carbon costs” of manufacturing such products far away from the source of steel production.
