Norwegian oil giants Statoil have made a potentially significant discovery in the North Sea.

The company have been drilling at the Aldous structure and estimate the amount under the waves to be between 400 and 800 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent.

Statoil spokesman Ola Anders Skauby told Reuters: “Discoveries are always positive, and this is a significant oil column.”

The well is located 4.2 kilometres north of discovery well 16-2/8 in the Aldous Major South structure on the Utsira Height in the North Sea.
