Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says his country needs to be more energy efficient, according to Indian paper, The Hindu.

Dr Singh said at an energy conservation conference last week: “Since we are largely dependent on fossil fuels, any improvement in the energy efficiency of our thermal power generation plants will help reduce energy intensity of our GDP.”

India’s energy supply is currently dominated by a combination of coal (42%) and oil (23%), according to the International Energy Agency’s 2008 figures. Recently, power outages have plagued some of its larger cities such as Mumbai (pictured).
