Big Six energy supplier RWE npower has announced its Tilbury biomass plant will open a new unit which is due to start producing power next week, making it the UK’s largest biomass plant.

The third of three units at the 750MW power plant will be commercially operational by the end of January. The plant received its first delivery of 46,000 tonnes of wood pellets in November from the United States, where RWE Innogy owns a biomass pellet factory.
