Energy efficiency measures in the home will insulate the UK against “volatile” wholesale gas prices which are affected by global events. That’s according to the chief of the body which represents the energy industry including the Big Six suppliers.

Christine McGourty, director of Energy UK was speaking about efficiency as part of the Big Energy Week campaign running at the moment.

She told 5Live yesterday: “We haven’t got the North Sea supplies we used to have so we’re more affected by the international market and that’s the reason for some of the messages that we’re all trying to get out this week around Big Energy Week, in particular around energy efficiency.

“If our homes are more energy efficient then whatever happens on the international market we’ll be able to keep ourselves warmer by using less.”
