Statistics released by DECC show that the UK’s reliance on imported natural gas has significantly increased over the last few years.

Gas imported has increased from 338,026 GWh in 2007 to 589,497 GWh in 2010, which is a rise of over 74% in just three years.

The statistics also reveal that imports of electricity grew and are expected to increase over the next couple of years. The imports share of UK electricity demand rose from 1.4% in the last quarter of 2010 up to 3.1% in the third quarter of 2011.
