Folding electric cars could be the answer to parking in tight, busy European streets, if the European Commission’s President is to be believed. At a recent Commission event José Manuel Durao Barroso spoke out in favour of projects such as the HIRIKO car, the smart car which can fold up in a parking space, created by a Spanish consortium.

Mr Barroso said: “HIRIKO is an example of how to resuscitate traditional industrial sectors and lead them to new challenges, such as urban mobility.”

HIRIKO expects 9,000 units per year to be produced by 2015 in Europe and America, with production at the first assembly plant kicking off in 2013.
