Chris Huhne has resigned as Energy Secretary. The Lib Dem MP made a short statement to the media from outside his London home moments after the CPS said he would face prosecution for perverting the course of justice.

He said:”I intend to fight this in the courts and I am confident that a jury will agree. So as to avoid any distraction to either my official duties or my trial defence I am standing down and resigning as Energy and Climate Change Secretary, I will of course continue to serve my constituents in Eastleigh. Thankyou and that’s all I want to say today.”

Mr Huhne and his ex-wife Vicky Pryce are both facing charges over a speeding offence from 2003 and will be in court on February 16th.

Ed Davey is now seen as his most likely replacement as Energy Secretary. DECC say they will be releasing a statement soon.
