German manufacturer Siemens is to build the US army’s largest solar powered project to date.

The 4.5MW solar PV system at the White Sands Missile Range will help the site use 10.8% renewable energy by the end of 2012, up from 0.5%, claims the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The project is part of a much larger order for $16.8 million (£10.6m) worth of energy-saving upgrades to fall in line with President Barack Obama’s demand that federal government agencies become more efficient.
