EDF Energy has formed a partnership with Dutch firm Eneco to develop the Navitus Bay Wind Project to the west of the Isle of Wight. The firms claim the proposed project could deliver between 900MW and 1200MW of capacity in the northern part of the area, which covers 76 square miles. The farm could be large enough to produce power to supply up to 820,000 homes.
Huub den Rooijen, head of offshore wind at The Crown Estate said: “The arrival of one of Europe’s biggest utility companies into the Round 3 programme provides another boost for the offshore wind industry, bringing new expertise and skills into the UK market to help drive forward the world’s largest offshore wind programme.”
The Crown Estate awarded the area to Eneco in 2009, following a tendering process designed to encourage the development of around 32GW of offshore wind power in UK waters by 2020.
