The Draft Energy Bill which will be announced tomorrow by Energy Secretary Ed Davey has already sparked concerns among green organisations and energy companies.

The bill, which was confirmed as part of the Queen’s speech earlier this month, is set to reform the electricity market explaining the benefits to consumers, investors, the environment and the economy.

John Sauven, Executive Director of Greenpeace claims it could be a huge opportunity to get energy bills and carbon emissions under control but is a “looming energy omnishambles.”

He said: “Ministers seem hell-bent on scuppering all of these aims by encouraging a big increase in our dependence on burning expensive gas to generate electricity. This would increase the burden on families and businesses and see money from bills going to countries like Qatar and Norway instead of back into the British economy.”

SSE, among other energy comapnies, also has concerns about the Government’s ‘Contracts for Difference’ (CfD) proposal for new low carbon investments, which it believes has flaws. It also suggests the Government needs to ensure it has workable solutions for renewables in the Bill to deliver a simple and effective scheme.

The Draft Energy Bill announcement will start at 1pm tomorrow.
