Bristol, home of the Clifton Suspension Bridge (pictured), is in the running to be titled Europe’s Greenest City.

The only UK city to have been shortlisted for the award, city officials predict the win could create 1000 new green jobs and provide £1million to the local economy.

The city’s campaign to win The European Green Capital Award (EGCA) has gained major national support, with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg saying it is a “fitting tribute” to the work done to promote sustainability across the city.

He said: “If Bristol is successful, (the Government) would work closely with the City Council in order to maximise the opportunities that this would create for Bristol and the UK.”

Bristol is joined by Frankfurt and Copenhagen in the run for the 2014 award. The winner will be announced on 29 June.
