Theatres used to only worry about their audience numbers but now they have something else to think about – energy efficiency.

That’s thanks to a new guide launched today which is meant to help theatres cut energy bills and plan a sustainable future.

Launched by The Theatres Trust and green advisory group, Julie’s Bicycle, the first online edition of a two-part guide titled ‘Energising Culture’ urges cultural building managers to rethink their energy use regardless of the size of the buildings or the shows to save money and cut carbon.

Mhora Samuel, Director at The Theatres Trust said: “The way theatres use and generate energy is part of their DNA. ‘Energising Culture’ will guide many more theatres to make the right energy decisions and help them to become more energy efficient.”

The guide also encourages theatre managers to boost energy efficient measures by educating staff on how to save energy and by planning performances in a way that reduces energy demand.
