IKEA will soon be using only renewable energy at all its buildings, stores and offices in Sweden after buying 30 new wind turbines.

The Swedish purveyor of flat-pack furniture announced today it is investing in a new wind farm on Glötesvålen, a mountain in Härjedalen, Sweden.

Construction will start this summer and the wind farm is expected to be operational by the end of 2014/beginning of 2015.

Steve Howard, Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Group said: “At IKEA, we want to take a leading role in the transition to a low-carbon society by only using 100% renewable energy in our global operations. By only using wind power in Sweden, it is an exciting and important step toward reaching that goal.”

Ikea’s operations in the UK are currently powered by around 30% renewable energy, from a wind farm with seven turbines.

A spokesman told ELN the UK stores could also follow suit but could not say when: “The ambition is to go completely renewable.”

The IKEA Group currently has 96 wind turbines in operation or under construction around the world.
