The Blackfriars solar bridge, set out to be the world’s largest, reached half point yesterday as the 2,200th solar panel was installed.

The new bridge being built over the Thames river will have more than 4,400 solar panels installed and is an upgrade to the 1886 Victorian bridge to help cater for more passengers and improve the service.

Frans van den Heuvel, CEO of Solarcentury, the company behind the installations said: “Blackfriars will be one of the world’s great solar power installations. Architecturally challenging, the project demonstrates just what is possible with this versatile technology in dense urban areas… It’s a great feeling to be half way there.”

The bridge is expected to generate about 900,000kWh of electricity every year, providing 50% of the station’s energy and reducing carbon emissions by about 511 tonnes a year.
