Canada is likely to miss its emissions target by a fifth, its Environment Minister is said to have announced yesterday.

The North American nation was one of the countries seen to be obstructing agreements at the COP 17 summit in Durban earlier this year.

The country’s yearly greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 will be 19% higher than its international climate change commitment, according to Environment Minister Peter Kent.

The minister will not set a target to cap pollution from the country’s fastest growing source of greenhouse gases – oilsands development – to safeguard jobs, reported Canadian news site the Times Colonist.

Previously Canada’s federal government said it would miss the targets set under the 2009 Copenhagen climate change agreement by nearly 30%.
