SSE’s energy price rise is a “serious blow” for UK consumers, according to a price comparison site.

The comment follows the energy company’s announcement yesterday to increase its electricity and gas prices by 9% starting October this year, which is expected to affect around 8.4million customers.

The move will add an extra £119 to an average SSE energy bill, increasing from £1,235 to £1,354.

Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com said: “This is a serious blow for cash-strapped consumers. With winter on its way households will now have to brace themselves for higher fuel prices too. Last winter, over eight in ten households (83%) rationed their energy use because of cost – a round of price hikes this winter will condemn many more to this misery too.”

She added consumers must protect themselves by making their homes more energy efficient and by moving to a cheaper energy deal, with a difference of £315 between the cheapest and most expensive.
