A national campaign has been launched to raise awareness about heat loss from homes.

The “Hole in the Roof” scheme kicked off today by the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council, a branch of the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), wants to show people that simple changes to behaviour can make a real difference when it comes to your pocket, a warm home and the environment.

The campaign’s new website give tips on home improvements like double glazing, insulation and draught proofing to cut down energy and heating bills.

Hole in the Roof says it aims to tackle all consumers not just those who are already converted into having an energy efficient home. Their action comes on the same day as a Government drive to promote efficiency in all sectors.

Support for the elderly charity, Saga, believes the campaign could help people pick ways to cope with heating costs.

Dr Ros Altmann, Director-General of Saga said: “We support the idea of making older people’s homes more energy efficient as it can help them afford to live more comfortably and in better health.

“It is important however, that people research any free services available to make their homes energy efficient (such as those on offer from energy companies or grant funding) and ensure they get the best deal possible and a quality service on things they are paying for.”

Environmental campaigner Tony Juniper who is also backing the scheme said: “A huge amount of the power and heat we generate does no good at all, it lights empty rooms, powers TVs that no one is watching and goes through walls and doors, and that is not only an issue for our environment, it is also a massive waste of money.”
