An electric solar-powered “super car” has been a major feature at the Qatar Sustainability Expo taking place on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference.

Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec) and SolarWorld will educate thousands of visitors about the emissions-free Tesla Roadster “for the first time in the Middle East”.

SolarWorld’s ‘SunCarport’, a combination of a traditional carport and a high-performance solar energy roof, will supply solar power to charge the car’s batteries. The firms claim the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 in just 3.6 seconds and can travel up to 300km per charge.

Dr Khalid Klefeekh Al Hajri, Chairman and CEO of QSTec said: “We are here today to send a clear message to the world that solar energy is playing a major role in our global sustainable future. By showcasing interesting solar solutions and applications to our community, we hope to inspire and encourage our young scientists and entrepreneurs to explore new uses for solar energy.”

The UN Conference will see 194 countries talk about tackling climate change and limiting global warming to 2°C.
