Energy giant Statkraft is set to build a second onshore wind farm in the Scottish Highlands with an investment worth £70 million.

The Norwegian firm has already started construction work on the 66.7MW Berry Burn Wind Farm near Inverness, which will include a total of 29 wind turbines, each with an output of 2.3MW.

The project is expected to generate around 184GWh of energy per year and help the company strengthen its position in the UK energy market and contribute to Scotland’s growth in renewables.

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing MSP welcomed the project: “The news that construction has started on the Berry Burn Wind Farm is excellent for Moray and for Scotland as a whole. During construction, up to 50 jobs will be created for local people and once the wind farm is operational a fund will be established to ensure the local community shares in the financial benefits it will bring.”

The wind farm is expected to be completed in early 2014.

Earlier this year, Statkraft opened the 317MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm off the Norfolk coast and has been granted a licence to develop Europe’s largest offshore wind farm on Dogger Bank.
