Spanish energy group Iberdrola has chosen Areva to supply turbines for its wind farm in Germany.

The French turbine manufacturer will supply its M5000 5MW turbine for the Wikinger wind farm, currently being developed around 35km off the Baltic Sea.

It is expected to produce up to 400MW of electricity, equivalent to powering around 350,000 homes.

Luc Oursel, CEO of AREVA said: “We are honoured by Iberdrola’s renewed confidence in AREVA’s offshore wind technology which further comforts the group’s strong ambitions in Europe. This new success further demonstrates the credibility of our long term growth strategy and our long term commitment towards renewable energies.”

AREVA claims it will have more than 120 wind turbines installed in the North Sea by 2014. Iberdrola’s offshore wind project pipeline in Germany currently stands at around 2,000MW.

The construction of the wind farm is scheduled for 2016-17.
