Three wheeled cars are usually found on winding roads in the Italian hillside – but carmaker Toyota has a new vision for the three-wheelers which sees them hit the world’s cities powered by batteries.

The Japanese firm premiered its new electric model which uses a lithium-ion battery, the iRoad (pictured), at the Geneva International Motor Show currently on in Switzerland. It says the iRoad is suited for driving short distances around urban areas as it has a driving range of 50km. The so-called “active lean” system means the car has “motorcycle-like” manoeuvrability.

With two seats positioned one behind the other like a tandem bicycle, the car is very slim at a width of 85cm so it needs less space for parking, says Toyota, as it takes up only three-quarters to half of a conventional parking spot.
