Authorities at a nuclear power station in the United States are scratching their heads after a bizarre shooting event at the plant yesterday.

Gunshots were fired during the incident involving a nuclear security officer at the Watts Bar power station in Tennessee (pictured) at around 2am local time. As yet is unclear why anyone fired at the officer.

Tennessee Valley Authority runs the plant which stands on 1,700 acres near the Chickamauga Reservoir. The TVA says it has stood down from its “unusual” event status.

A TVA statement added: “Although an investigation into the event is continuing, plant staff confirmed that there were no lapses in security measures that are in place to fully protect the plant and the general public.”
