A new institute focusing on the ‘life cycle’ of energy has been established at Aberdeen University.

Mostly focused on oil and gas, the Aberdeen Institute of Energy will bring people together from a range of disciplines, from physical, environmental and social scientists to engineers, economists and lawyers.

It will look at every step of the life cycle of energy from the initial demand to exploration, production, generation, distribution and use to the environmental impact and the behaviours that in turn influence new demand.

The institute will be located in a 15,000 square metre purpose built facility on the University’s King’s College campus (pictured). It’s hoped it will become a global energy centre for research, education and industry collaboration.

John Scrimgeour, an oil industry veteran and the Executive Director of the Aberdeen Institute of Energy said: “It’s exactly what the industry, government and policy holders need – a single point of contact right here in the Energy Capital of Europe to link up with all the latest multidisciplinary teaching and research concerning the energy sector, building on the expertise built up through working closely with the oil and gas industry located on our doorstep.”
