Householders in Milton Keynes could save more than £150 on their gas and electricity bills this winter by joining a community energy-switching scheme.

They are being invited to join the scheme to form an energy buying group in a bid to negotiate a bulk discount deal from power companies.

Milton Keynes Council has joined forces with energy-switching firm Ichoosr for the ‘Big Community Switch’ initiative to encourage more people to join and cut costs.

Councillor Edith Bald, Cabinet Member for Finance and Housing said: “This community scheme has already proved to be a great success and we are now pleased to be able to offer the same benefits of reduced energy bills to citizens in Milton Keynes. Everyone can take advantage of the scheme even if you are currently using a pre-payment meter or are on a fixed deal.”

Although the savings are not guaranteed, the more people in the scheme the better the deal energy firms could offer.

Residents need to register by mid-October to take advantage of the scheme. However, once a bulk deal is agreed, those that have registered can still opt out if they decide the deal isn’t for them.

A new collective switching initiative was also launched earlier this year to help householders save as much as £220 a year.
