Oil and gas company BG Group nabbed the top spot out of energy companies in a ranking of businesses for their sustainability.

The 2013 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) Review highlights the most sustainable companies in 24 different industrial sectors.

Other industry leaders included Volkswagen for cars, Nestlé for food, drink and tobacco and Panasonic for consumer goods.

S&P Dow Jones Indices worked alongside sustainable investment specialist RobeccoSAM to create the review, inviting 3,000 publicly traded companies to undergo a Corporate Sustainability Assessment. The companies were judged on their economic, environmental and social practices with a focus on industry-specific risks and opportunities.

Guido Giese, Head of Indices for RobecoSAM said: “The DJSI have a double impact. They enable investors to integrate sustainability into their portfolios and at the same time they provide an engagement platform that encourages companies to adopt sustainable best practices. We encourage active participation in our Corporate Sustainability Assessment each year and this year we were happy to see a 31% increase in participation from companies in emerging markets.”
