ELN has learned the Government has struck a deal with EDF over a strike price for the Hinkley Point nuclear plant at £93/MWh.

The long-awaited deal between the French supplier and the UK over a third power plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset (artist’s impression, pictured) has been delayed for months.

When Energy Secretary Ed Davey gave the project planning consent in March, talks were said to be on a knife edge. The strike price was supposed to be revealed in July but sources said talks had been difficult with both sides failing to agree on a figure that would give the power giant the confidence it needed to forge ahead.

A strike price would come under the Government’s new mechanism to pay for low carbon energy, the Contracts for Difference.

Neither DECC or EDF were making any comments when contacted by ELN.
