The automotive giant Volkswagen has partnered with green energy supplier Ecotricity to make sure its electric cars aren’t still running on fossil fuels.

Any customer buying an electric car from one of the Volkswagen Group’s brands – which include VW, Audi and Bentley – will be offered Ecotricity’s 100% renewable energy tariff to power their house and car.

Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity said: “As someone who drives an electric vehicle, it is important where your fuel comes from.

“Running a car on green electricity from the wind and the sun is the last piece of the jigsaw – it’s the ultimate in green motoring.”

Volkswagen Group Chairman Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn has said the company aims to be the marker leader in electric vehicles by 2018. The firm’s e-up! model will be the first of its electric cars to go on sale in Britain.
