All the street lamps on the Mediterranean isle of Malta will be replaced with energy efficient lights, the Maltese Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi said this week.

The “intelligent” street lighting will first be installed in a pilot project on neighbouring island Gozo – famed for its abundant prickly pears – next before being rolled out across the whole country, its government announced in a Budget speech.

The test project which is co-financed by the European Union, is projected to cost €2.8 million (£2.3m) with the full rollout costing €5.4million (£4.5m), reported the Times of Malta.
