A Colombian telecoms firm hopes to mash down its electricity bill by £4 million (13,000 million pesos) through its PUREE energy efficiency scheme.

Une Epm Telecomunicaciones (UNE) said last week it has already saved 6.8 million kilowatts of electricity and reduced its emissions by about 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent with the scheme since 2009.

The TV and broadband provider will have spent £1.5million (5,000 million pesos) over 2013 and 2014 on energy efficiency.

It carried out more than 100 actions such as efficient lighting, updating its air conditioning and replacing old equipment, improving its energy pricing systems and boosting awareness of energy efficiency.

The goal by 2015 is to achieve a 20% reduction in the yearly electrical its uses to serve each of its clients.

Juan David Palacio Hernández, Environmental Professional at UNE said energy efficiency has “enormous potential” for organisations looking to be sustainability as well as “social, economic and environmental” benefits.

UNE is also using solar technology to heat water (pictured) and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to power its equipment.
