The Netherlands’ largest football stadium is upping its green credentials by covering its roof with solar panels.

Home to the Ajax football club, Amsterdam ArenA (pictured) will have 4,200 solar panels installed on the roofs, generating around 930,000 kWh of power every year.

That’s approximately 10% of the current annual electricity usage and is equivalent to powering around 270 households for a year.

CEO Henk Markerink said this is part of the arena’s sustainable programme: “The installation of the solar panels is an important and logical next step towards the realisation of a net climate neutral stadium by 2015.”

Brazil last year also opened a football stadium powered by solar energy in preparation for the FIFA World Cup.
