The chief executive of oil giant ExxonMobil believes the United States will be “energy secure” by 2020.
In an interview today, Rex Tillerson said he preferred the phrase “self-sufficient” as opposed to “independence” because the two terms suggest different mindsets.
Mr Tillerson told US news channel CNBC: “It’s apparent to us energy self-sufficiency [by the end of the decade] has become a realistic aspiration.
“We’re already the world’s largest natural gas producer, last year our crude oil production surpassed levels not seen since the 1980s and it’s expected we’ll continue to add to crude oil production capacity for the next two or three years.”
He seems to have made no mention of renewable energy’s role in the superpower’s future in the interview.
