SSE’s generation business won planning permission for a 32 turbine wind farm in the Caledonian mountains today.

The Bhlaraidh wind farm near the Great Glen Way (pictured), a favourite route for hikers, will be 4km north-west of Invermoriston. Its capacity of up to 108MW could power the equivalent of 50,900 homes.

Building is expected to cost around £166.3 million and once finished, the wind farm could provide around £13 million over 25 years for projects in the local community such as a sustainable energy fund and skills and training initiatives.

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “Wind farms like this provide considerable benefits to their local community and play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100% of electricity demand generated from renewables.”
