Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire is getting a new energy centre which could save it £112,000 a year on energy costs.

The NHS Trust hospital is home to some of the most dangerous criminals in the UK. By the end of 2014 it will get all its heating and hot water and roughly 87% of its total electricity needs from the new combined heat and power plant.

Coal-fired boilers are being ditched for a 1MW biomass boiler, a 1.2MW combined heat and power (CHP) engine and three efficient dual-fuel boilers running predominantly on gas. A new building management system will also be installed.

The energy centre should reduce CO2 emissions by around 8,000 tonnes a year.

Paul Rawson, Energy Services Director at Cofely, a power firm GDF SUEZ’s facilities management business which is running the project said: “The new Energy Centre will provide Rampton Hospital with a more efficient, reliable and responsive energy infrastructure that will deliver guaranteed savings with a fast return on investment.”

The project qualifies for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive.
