Strong winds and heavy rain left thousands of homes without power in Britain last night.

At least 7,400 households still have no access to electricity in south west England, Western Power Distribution said, as gales and downpours caused havoc, bringing down power lines and trees.

The company has deployed extra engineers and staff from south Wales and the Midlands to help restore power in the affected areas “as quickly as possible”, a spokesperson told ELN.

East and west Midlands are “operating as normal” and electricity in 6,000 homes in south Wales was restored overnight, she added.

Nearly 60,000 homes were also hit by power cuts during the Christmas period last year.
