Ten people were injured following a gas explosion in a residential area in Clacton, Essex this morning.

A man believed to be in his 70s was airlifted to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford with life-threatening injuries while a woman in her 50s were treated for severe burns.

A further eight casualties were taken to Colchester hospital with “serious and minor injuries”, including burns broken legs, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

It received several calls at 8.27am this morning following which a paramedic response car was sent to the scene.

The blast “flattened” two houses and badly damaged a third, according to the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service.

A total of 19 properties were evacuated by Essex Police, with residents taken to Clacton Town Hall.
