Consumers who have smart meters installed in their homes are “generally 40% more satisfied” than those who haven’t, British Gas claims.

The energy supplier has installed smart meters in over a million homes and businesses across the UK and its research revealed customers are taking “active steps” to better manage their consumption.

Paul Nickson, Commercial Director – Smart Metering told ELN: “We’ve just done some behavioural analysis with customers and tried to understand what impact having a smart energy monitor and an in-home display in the home has and what we found is that nine out of 10 customers are now taking active steps – those that have smart meters – in trying to manage their energy better.

“We found that 54% of customers that are using their smart energy monitor believe that they’re now saving money as a direct result of it, with two thirds of those customers saying they’ve saved over £75 on an annual basis.”

The UK Government has set a target of installing 53 million smart meters across the country by the end of the decade.
