The firm constructing the largest wind farm in the Netherlands has won funding worth €350 million (£288m).

NOP Agrowind will use the cash from the European Investment Bank (EIB), German KfW IPEX-Bank and Dutch lender Rabobank to install 26 new turbines in the existing wind farm.

Once completed, Windpark Noordoostpolder (pictured) will have 86 turbines, bringing the total capacity to 195MW. It will produce 1.4 billion kWh of electricity – enough to power more than 400,000 households every day.

The first turbine is expected to start generating in September, with completion of the project scheduled for 2016.

Pim van Ballekom, EIB Vice President responsible for the Netherlands said: “Unlocking the potential of wind energy both improves energy security and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”
