A new facility that will be able to convert around 22,500 tonnes of food waste into energy every year is now online in Wales.

Claimed to be the largest in the country, Biogen’s £7.5 million Waen plant in Denbighshire will help generate 1MW of renewable electricity – enough to power around 2,000 homes.

The anaerobic digestion plant will also produce a valuable biofertiliser to be supplied for use on nearby farms.

Julian O’Neill, Chief Executive of Biogen said: “The Waen plant and our other projects in Wales and in England are making a significant contribution to the target of meeting 15% of the UK’s energy demand through renewable sources by 2020.”

The food waste is being sent to the facility from a consortium of Denbighshire, Conwy and Flintshire local authorities.
