There has been an increase in demand for gas today which has left the system short, according to the daily market report from npower.

Demand has risen to 164 million cubic meters – up from 150 million cubic meters yesterday, Client Portfolio Manager Gemma Bruce (pictured) said.

Storage nominations were “close to zero” this morning however they are expected to increase through the day.

Looking at the power system, she adds generation from gas-fired power stations have risen to cover lower production from wind farms. Coal and nuclear generation are also “continuing to be subdued at around 6GW”, Ms Bruce said.

She suggests monitoring the Russia-Ukraine situation “as any further developments are likely to give direction to the curve”.
