Ford Motor Company has announced plans to invest more than $25 million (£15.4m) to install energy efficient lights at its manufacturing facilities across the globe.

It aims to roll-out 25,000 new LED lighting globally by the end of this year, which are expected to reduce energy use by 56 million kWh every year – enough to power more than 6,000 homes.

That would mean a reduction of up to 70% in energy use compared to traditional lighting, according to Ford. It also expects to save around $7 million (£4.3m) in energy costs every year.

George Andraos, Director of Energy and Sustainability at Ford Land said: “Moving to LED gives us impressive efficiency improvement. Ford worked closely with its scientists and suppliers to investigate and closely follow the rapid development of LED lighting.”

The company aims to lower its energy use by 25% per vehicle produced at its facilities by 2016.
